IMO one of the reasons cell phone industry is doing so well is their capacity to adapt from other successful devices. Telecommuting and messaging are great basic services, but you could always do a bit more.

When digital cameras became a commodity and a must have, camera features were integrated to cell phones. The same happened with success of iPod and other music devices, cell phones are currently a jukebox also. And then there are of course smart phones with Bluetooth, internet capability etc features. To summarize, cell phones are trying to be the modern day Swiss army knife.

However, as a business user, there is always room for improvement. After all, camera, music etc. features are mainly for home users… One of the features I would like to see in future cell phones is integrated external storage and a optical mouse. I have two very practical reasons for my wish / vision:

1. Less is better
   One the things I hate, especially when on the road, is the number of accessories that must be packed / unpacked. The minimum set contains at least a mobile phone, battery charger, laptop, mouse, various cables, external storage media (usually USB memory stick)… The less I need to carry around when travelling, the more happier I would be.
2. A better security
   According to most studies, one of the biggest threats related to computing come from loss of mobile devices with sensitive data. Once again, less is better… Losing / misplacing USB stick or CD-R is much more likely to happen than losing a cell phone. Also, since most mobile phones can be tracked (or even remotely re-configured), this could be a winning combination for security view.

Most likely there are already some niche phones with this feature set, but hopefully this kind of practical adoptions will hit mainstream some day.
